Essentials for summer

Get out the SPF 800 sunblock. It is going to be summer soon, St. Kate’s, and that means we’re going to need to stock up on a few things. Keep in mind that summer requires lightweight, versatile pieces that can be thrown together and mixed and matched with ease.

After we are done with the pastels of spring we are going to need some major changes to our wardrobes, and the most important item for summer is the maxi dress. It is a versatile standby of summers past that can be dressed up or down while still being extremely comfortable. Add a statement necklace and cute shoes to dress it up, or dress it down with a slouchy scarf and sandals for an everyday look, either way you’re summer isn’t complete without a maxi dress.
If you want to depart from the traditional denim shorts, give a high waisted full skirt a whirl. This piece is just a versatile as the maxi dress—if not more. Pair it with a t-shirt or a button down shirt and you’re in business for a cute summery outfit! Another great alternative for that denim jacket you wore all spring is the denim vest. Long since forgotten in the back of many a mom’s closet, this piece will add structure to a t-shirt or a dress while still remaining lightweight and breezy. Like most of us, second year Emma Scagnelli says “in the summer it is really important to me to stay cool and avoid getting over-heated and sweaty.” Therefore another lightweight option is the sleeveless button up, which will look cute with just about anything while helping you avoid heatstroke!

A great accessory to have at your side in the summer is a simple canvas tote. With it’s spacious interior, classic clean look and light weight fabric, a tote bag is the perfect bag to carry everything you need! Another summer style essential is the d’orsay flat. Much like a regular ballet flat – except this shoe features a sharp dip in the inner side of the shoe and a dainty ankle strap. This shoe has far less material but still retains the classic flat look and pairs nicely with just about anything.

My personal favorite of my summer essentials is a cute bathing suit. Whether it’s a bold one piece or a bikini, I feel a summer just isn’t complete without one. There is nothing like sunbathing on the beach with one of Oprah’s picks while wearing an adorable bathing suit. Pair that with some large sunglasses and a well patterned beach towel and you are beach ready!
The key elements to a good summer wardrobe are temperature regulation, ease and versatility. All that you really need for summer are a few sturdy, classic pieces in your wardrobe. As long as they are lightweight, and that you can throw together a bunch of cute outfits with them, you’re sure to have an adorable summer!
