The two must-have drinks for the holiday season

With the first official snow fall, it is time to start drinking those famous holiday drinks. While Starbucks is sure to offer a top notch hot chocolate, why not try creating one at home? Here are two recipes for the best holiday drinks.

Peppermint Hot Chocolate is a classic beverage nearly everyone enjoys. There is white chocolate, peppermint, egg nog and a million other versions that tingle taste buds, but for the best hot chocolate, follow this recipe.

The best hot chocolate
2 cups of milk
4 ounces of bittersweet chocolate
1 teaspoon of peppermint extract
2 tablespoons of sugar
Whip cream (optional)
Crushed candy cane (optional)

First, heat the milk in either the microwave or stove top until it is sizzling with invitingness. Next, add the chocolate and peppermint extract to the steaming milk and stir until perfectly mixed. Then, add sugar for just a touch of sweetness and, finally, swirl the whip cream on top. For an extra push, smash some candy cane and sprinkle above the whipped cream. Serve, relax and enjoy the warm holiday drink made at home.

The next holiday drink that can be made in a home kitchen and not only purchased at a local coffee ship is Hot Apple Cinnamon Spice Cider.

Hot Apple Cinnamon Spice Cider
1 ounce of ground cinnamon
½ tablespoon of ground nutmeg
4 ounces of sugar
Your favorite apple juice or cider
Cinnamon stick (optional)

Begin by warming the apple juice or cider in the microwave or stove top. Adding the ground cinnamon and nutmeg, stir until all ingredients are combined evenly, then add in the sugar. Once everything is stirred and ready for enjoyment, place a cinnamon stick in the drink for a spark in appearance and drink up!

Former Starbucks Barista Liz Maczko knows just what everyone is craving during the holiday season.

“As soon as the Peppermint Hot Chocolate or Mocha is advertised in our signature red cups, there is no stop to orders for those drinks. A lot of customers add peppermint to their drink choices to add a little festivity too! All in all it’s a busy season,” Maczko said.

Although there are infinite drinks Katie’s can enjoy over the holidays, these two can be savored without going into the cold weather. Pocket the $5 spent at a coffee shop and try mixing it up in the kitchen. Who knows, a new favorite recipe may be found by mixing old favorites with new twists!

Happy Holidays!
