On December 16 SEEK will host the 14th annual Charity Ball in the third-floor Ballroom from 7-10 p.m. It is a semi-formal event meant to raise money for the organization ‘Sarah’s..: an Oasis for Women’. They offer housing, job training, and language classes to women seeking refuge from violence, abuse, torture, war, discrimination, and trauma.
“The house basically is a safety-zone for them that allows them to [find] job opportunities, have access to [transportation], learn how to [excel in interviews], to learn English if they don’t already know it.. It’s just a very safe space… That’s what Sarah’s is,” said Brandi Winsor, Electronic and Media Studies major ‘17. Winsor is a SEEK member who spearheads the event. “Most women are at the point where they can leave [Sarah’s] within a year.”
This year, SEEK will be introducing new activities to the event in an effort to increase donations; including sponsorship packages that gives sponsors free admission to the event, social media recognition, and a chance to tour the Sarah’s home. There will be also be a ‘Dollars For Dares’ activity, which entails placing money in a jar in order to make St. Kate’s staff members (including the president) go through with a dare. In addition to this, SEEK will be collecting donations from the recommended door fee ($6 for St. Kate’s students, $8 for faculty and guests), a silent auction and a donation box that will be set out in the Marketplace December 1.
“Once you’re in the event there’ll be free food, dancing, we have a DJ playing this year, [and a] photo booth” said Winsor.
The donation goal for this year is set at $5,000, which SEEK intends to reach as the result of introducing new activities. Residents and staff members of Sarah’s have been invited to attend the event, as well as the Sisters of St. Joseph. In the words of Winsor, “[Charity Ball is] a chance to build connections, to learn about St. Kate’s and Sarah’s; it’s a great time.”
